i am miserable today

my mouth hurts. i got to visit my least favorite person this morning, and he gave me a filling.

my neck aches. i'm sick. again. that's 3 outta 4 weeks this month.

my head hurts. a combination of being sick, and having a throbbing mouth.

my leg hurts. i went for a run this morning and things aren’t working the way they should. i don't know when it happened, but i pulled a muscle in my left hammy and haven't been able to touch my toes for two weeks now.

i'm upset. the marathon is in 3.5 days, and as i sit right now, there is no doubt in my mind that i'm worse off than i was before i started training back in October. furthermore, rain is expected on Sunday, and the temp is going to be in the 40's. i don't think i've run in 40-degree weather at all this year.

no bueno.

i'm a big puss, so i think i'll just sit here for the rest of the day and wallow in my own pathetic misery. i wish i had a big scoop of shit ice cream. that would really help top off my day. sometimes feeling sorry for myself is the only thing that matters in life.

A Provocative Look At Love

Good evening. I?m glad you could join me on this, the Sunday before the blackest Tuesday of the year. I?m glad you stopped by because unlike most, I have a treat for you tonight.

A real treat indeed.

I normally don?t do this sort of thing, but with the looming holiday, I thought this to be an appropriate time as any to declare my newfound faith to all of my hapless friends out there in the internet wonderland.

In fact, you?ve really struck gold tonight... because I just realized it?s past my bedtime. What does that mean?... well, for me that means that in just a few minutes I?ll be forced to crawl into the most uncomfortable bed known to man, but for you, that means you get the really, really, really, really, short version of what it was I had originally intended on posting.

Here...

Go out and buy it. Read it. Enjoy it. Embrace it. Talk about it with strangers. Talk about it with ME. Buy the hardback ?cause you?re gonna wanna lend to everyone you know.

Ok, that?s it for me. Tomorrow is Valentine?s Day, and tomorrow you will buy the ultimate Vantentine's Day book there ever were... Against Love.

My work is done here. Good night.

WHY NOW?

Question
If I were to ask you WHEN, in a 20-week training program, one would develop shin splints, what would you guess?

Answer
Well, if you’re me… and if you started your training back in October, and if the marathon is on February 19th, 2006, then your shin splints would develop, oh, on or about February 8th…approximately a week or so before the big race.

I've Got One For Ya...

Ever wondered what a mile and a half of railroad cobble, 5.7 miles of beach sand, and 16 miles of pavement looks like??

Well... wonder no more. Feast your eyes on last Sunday afternoon's run (below).

No sunscreen, no aid stations, no Gatorade stops, no bathroom breaks, no cheering spectators (unless you count the 8 or so naked men I casually exchanged head nods with --> a la Blacks Beach)... I did it the same way the caveman would have done it (except I had 3 packs of Gu, and a hundred dollar pair of shoes)... all in 3:00:01.

... what an epic run!! ...23.3 miles of some of the most beautiful Southern California shoreline, on what was one of the most beautiful, sunny, San Diego days. Ever.

With only 3 weeks remaining ‘til the Austin Marathon, I had one long run left to compete this weekend… and complete it I did!

Skipping the 20-mile Del Mar loop that I’ve a run a couple of times in the past month or so, I decided to mix things up to finish-out this seemingly endless winter training session. So on Sunday, after a late wake-up, a flavorful cup of coffee at Mozy Café, and (sure, yeah, I’ll admit it) a little bit of nail biting, I decided to take the plunge and make the long trip from my house in Leucadia, to Lisa’s house... in P.B.

Check it out!
(it'll take a while to load... there are a lot of points!)
